Heartworm

We are not a full service veterinary clinic. However, our Wellness Clinic services are open to everyone in the community!

What Are Heartworms?

Heartworms are a type of worm that develop in the hearts of our pets. These parasites are transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworms are common in our area of Indiana. Left undetected, heartworms cause the heart to enlarge and eventually lead to an agonizing death due to congestive heart failure.

Heartworm Testing

Pets Alive offers heartworm testing through our Wellness Clinic. In order to purchase heartworm preventatives, we require your pet be tested by our veterinarians prior to product purchase.

Our vets recommend testing your pet for heartworms at 6 months of age unless preventive was started at 3 months, in which case testing is recommended at one year and annually thereafter.

Heartworm Prevention Products

Heartworm prevention products are only available to clients who have been tested for heartworm at Pets Alive (either during surgery or at our Wellness Clinic). If your pet’s most recent heartworm test was at your full service veterinarian, we will require your pet to be tested during your Wellness Clinic appointment prior to purchasing preventative.

Annual testing is important even if your pet is on consistent preventive. Year-round preventive is our recommendation.
