What Are Heartworms?

Heartworms are a type of worm that develop in the hearts of dogs transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartworms are common in this part of Indiana. Left undetected, they cause the heart to enlarge and eventually lead to an agonizing death due to congestive heart failure. Pets Alive veterinarians recommend testing your pet for heartworms at 6 months of age unless preventive was started at 3 months, in which case test at one year. Test annually even if your pet is on preventive. Maintain administration of preventive year-round.

Heartworm Testing

Pets Alive offers heartworm testing during its Wellness Clinic hours. In order to purchase heartworm preventatives, Pets Alive requires your pet be tested by our veterinarians prior to product purchase.

Heartworm Prevention Products

Heartworm prevention products are only available to clients who have been tested for heartworm either during surgery or at our vaccination clinic. If your pet’s most recent heartworm test was at your full service veterinarian, we will require your pet to be tested during our Wellness Clinic hours prior to purchasing preventative, which is available for purchase at Pets Alive during office hours.
